Phthalate (pronounced Th-ah-lates) is a chemical compound used to "soften" hard plastics such as Latex, Rubber and Vinyl to make them more soft and flexible.
Phthalates can be found in many everyday products including children's toys, baby products, shampoos, cosmetics, medical devices and even car parts.
Products containing Phthalates decompose quickly, releasing dangerous toxic agents, a process that accelerates when in warm and moist environments .
The Phthalates leaches to the surface producing a foul odor and sticky oil , which is then easily absorbed by the body.
The effects on humans are unclear as there is no available research, however the effects on rodents is well documented.
Phthalates has been directly linked to a range of illnesses, including various Cancers, reproductive abnormalities, respiratory difficulties as well as casuing serious damage to vital organs such as the liver, lungs and kidneys .
Adult toys, Children's toys, teething rings, dummies and alike are in the high-risk category because of the potential lengthy contact they may have with the bodies soft tissue.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also a great concern as Phthalates is easily transferred from mother to baby.
Europe banned the use of Phthalates in Children's toys and Baby products in 2005 because of the "significant risks to the user".
The U.S. (EPA) has classified Phthalates as a "Probably Carcinogenic" . Wal-Mart and Toy R US have prohibited products containing certain Phthalates from their stores.
In 2006 Greenpeace extended the research into the manufacture of adult toys and found that seven of the eight sex toys tested contained between 24%-51% Phthalates.

Always read the label, manufacturers are not required to list their ingredients and many don't.

Phthalates has a foul smell and is likely to be heavily perfumed to hide the odour.
